What does it mean to be part of Generation M?
It’s time to stop living in the past and start moving to the Information Era. People in this new generation have this new idea that anyone can be able to transfer information at will and have on the spot access to information on the World Wide Web, of which anyone couldn’t do easily years before. This new generation that surrounds us all at this very second is called Generation M which is comprised of, every so often thought-out, children born between 1982 and 1998.
Relationships with family members is seen, often times, very different as opposed to the last generation of children. Now, there are many technological advances that long distance relationships are easier because you can email, call, or text your relatives from anywhere in the country and even the world. On the other hand, close distance relationships usually aren’t that in-depth because of this. Parents may be troubled by the health concerns of being born into this generation that previous generations might have not endured. Cyber-bullying is something that has presented itself throughout the years. Typically, one cannot know who is cyber-bullying them. One good thing that comes out of this generation is being able to look up information at your fingertips which can be beneficial for school research and of the like.
The problem with being online for long periods of time is that you won’t be physically active enough by sitting and doing things on the computer. Watching TV is also a result of this. Many people in Generation M have learned how to multitask very well. In schools, people tend to listen to music, open up at least two text documents, browse the internet generally, and message others instantaneously and all at once by the time they power up their desktops and laptops. I can do this relatively fine if I’m doing work by myself. The same applies to jobs; many people, especially teenagers and young adults, tend to forget the integrity of having a job and just take it for granted in this generation.
I have learned many things about the nature of Generation M in the past few weeks. Whenever I go online, I will be more aware of who I talk to. I am more mindful of the ability to find information such as images and tutorials easier than ever before on the World Wide Web. I learned that listening to music and doing other things can partially help one while doing homework, however, this is not a skill that I would want to rely on all of the time. Furthermore, everyone should know that no matter how old you are, whenever you add onto any social media profiles you may have, you should be sure not to throw out central information on your whereabouts, how you look, and you should be even more concerned about using your full name as a user name online, unless absolutely necessary, of course. Based on this fact, everyone I know likewise learned that other people can’t be shown through words as they could in person, online first impressions isn’t a good thing to base judgment upon as they do not always display anyone’s true self.
Technology still, however, makes our lives better in many ways as it was intended to. I myself believe that the whole general concept of Generation M is “human circuitry.” This is what it means to be a part of Generation M. This generation is all about influence, motivation, collaboration, forming bright ideas that will turn the future around, and design. In the end, it’s the sharing of ideas and seeing exactly how technology is able to transform the world past just a modest status update on any of your own main social media profiles.
